Signs your Connecticut panel is past it
The obvious one is a fuse box — if you are still unscrewing glass fuses, the service feeding your house was sized for a 1950s appliance load and you are almost certainly running extension leads to compensate. But plenty of breaker panels are equally overdue. Look for a panel that is completely full, one where someone has doubled up breakers on a single slot, rust or water staining inside the enclosure, breakers that are warm to the touch, or a panel that buzzes.
There are also brands with a documented failure history that we still find regularly in Connecticut homes — panels where the breaker can fail to trip under fault conditions. What a 200 amp upgrade actually involves
A service upgrade is a bigger job than swapping a panel, because it touches everything from the utility drop inward. We apply for the permit, arrange the disconnect with the utility, replace the service entrance cable and meter socket if they are undersized, fit the new panel and main breaker, re-terminate every branch circuit, install a new grounding electrode system and bonding, then get it inspected and reconnected.
In practice most Connecticut houses are without power for the working part of one day, and we schedule so that the disconnect and reconnect happen inside the same visit wherever the utility allows. We will give you the realistic outage window before you book, not after.

How long will my power be off?
For most Connecticut panel jobs the power is off for the working part of a single day. We aim to have the utility disconnect and reconnect happen within the same visit. Do I need a permit for a panel upgrade?

Is 200 amps enough, or should I go bigger?
For the vast majority of Connecticut homes 200 amps is the right answer and comfortably handles an EV charger, a heat pump and an induction range together. Larger services make sense for big square footage, multiple EVs, a workshop with heavy tools, or a house with electric heat and a pool. Can you just add a sub panel instead?
Sometimes, and it is cheaper when it works. If your main service has spare capacity but no free breaker slots, a sub panel is a sensible way to add circuits for a garage, basement or addition. If the service itself is undersized, a sub panel just moves the bottleneck. The load calculation decides it.
