A breaker that trips is a breaker doing its job. The question is what it is protecting you from. Some causes are a nuisance you can solve by moving a kettle to a different outlet. Others mean there is a fault generating heat inside a wall. The distinguishing test is simpler than most people expect.
The three-question triage
- Does it trip only when you run something specific? That points at overload or a faulty appliance.
- Does it trip with everything on that circuit unplugged? That points at a fault in the wiring itself. Stop resetting it.
- Does it refuse to reset at all, or feel warm? Treat as urgent. Call an electrician the same day.
Seven causes, in the order we find them
1. Genuine overload
Two heavy appliances on a circuit sized for a 1960s kitchen. The fix is a dedicated circuit for the appliance, not a bigger breaker — a bigger breaker on the same cable removes the protection without removing the problem.
2. A failing appliance
Motors draw far more current as bearings fail. A space heater, vacuum, well pump or old fridge can start tripping a circuit it lived on happily for years. Unplug things one at a time to isolate it.
3. Short circuit
Hot touching neutral, usually at a damaged cable, a crushed conductor behind a wall plate, or a failed device. Trips instantly and hard, regardless of load. Needs locating, not resetting.
4. Ground fault
Current leaking to ground, often through moisture. Very common on outdoor receptacles, garages and basements after rain. GFCI devices catch this by design.
5. Arc fault
A loose or damaged connection arcing intermittently. AFCI breakers detect the electrical signature. This is the mechanism behind a lot of electrical fires, which is why the trip is a gift rather than an annoyance.
6. The breaker itself has aged out
Breakers are mechanical and they wear, particularly after repeated tripping. A breaker that trips well below its rating with a verified light load is a candidate for replacement — but only after the circuit has been cleared, never as a first guess.
7. Back-stabbed and loose connections
Receptacles wired with the push-in spring terminals rather than the screws loosen over decades. Warm plate, intermittent outlet, sometimes an arc fault trip. Extremely common in Connecticut homes built from the 1960s onward.
Stop resetting and call today if you notice: a burning or hot-plastic smell, a warm or discoloured outlet or switch plate, buzzing from the panel, a breaker that will not reset, or lights across several rooms dimming and brightening together. What resetting repeatedly actually costs you
Every reset re-energises a fault. If the cause is arcing at a loose connection, you are re-lighting a small arc inside a wall cavity, and each cycle carbonises the surrounding material a little more, which makes the next arc easier. That is the progression from nuisance to fire. If the breaker has tripped three times for a reason you cannot explain, the reset has stopped being free. How to isolate the cause yourself, safely
You can do a lot of useful narrowing before anyone visits, and none of it requires opening anything. Start by unplugging everything on the affected circuit — walk the rooms and check for the things people forget, such as a chest freezer in the basement, a garage door opener, or an outdoor receptacle round the side of the house.
Then reset the breaker once. If it holds with everything unplugged, the wiring is fine and one of your appliances is the culprit; plug them back in one at a time with a few minutes between each and you will find it. If it trips immediately with nothing connected, stop there. The fault is in the wiring or the breaker itself, and further resets are not diagnostic — they are just re-energising a fault.
What never to do
- Never fit a larger breaker to stop the tripping. The breaker protects the cable, and a 20 amp breaker on 14 gauge wire removes that protection while leaving the fault in place.
- Never wedge, tape or otherwise defeat a breaker so it cannot trip.
- Never replace a fuse with a higher rating, or bridge a fuse holder with foil or a coin.
- Never open the panel cover. The busbars and main lugs are live even with every breaker off.
- Never keep resetting a breaker that trips instantly. Each cycle worsens an arcing fault.
Why older Connecticut homes trip more
Circuits designed in the 1950s and 60s assumed a household with one television, one refrigerator and very little else. A modern kitchen with a microwave, kettle, air fryer and coffee machine on the same twenty amp circuit is asking that circuit to do roughly three times the work it was designed for. The breaker is behaving correctly; the house has simply outgrown its wiring plan.
Add to that the back-stabbed receptacles that were standard from the late 1960s onward — the ones where the conductor is held by a small spring rather than a screw terminal — and you get connections that relax over five decades. Loose connections generate heat, heat makes them looser, and arc-fault breakers eventually notice. That progression is the mechanism behind a real share of house fires, which is why an unexplained trip is information rather than an inconvenience.
